Copyright Registration in United Arab Emirates

The sole legal right of the creator of a creative work is known as copyright. Copyright can be defined as the ability to copy or reproduce. In the UAE, copyright registration grants authors of original works the right to reproduce or use the work in other contexts for a typically finite amount of time.

What Kind of Intellectual Property can be Registered
Under Copyright As Per UAE Law?

According to UAE copyright legislation, any original work in the literary, artistic, educational, or musical fields will be taken into consideration for registration. The author’s rights are safeguarded by UAE Federal Law No. 7 of 2002 regulating copyright and neighbouring rights. Following works are eligible for registration under copyright laws:

  • novels, stories, articles, and other types of writing
  • applications, programmes, databases, and associated intellectual labour for computers
  • Lessons, lectures, and other related tasks
  • music performances, albums, plays, and dramas
  • Song lyrics, melodies, and music notation
  • video production
  • Layouts, sketches, plans, and works in architectural engineering
  • high art
  • working in photography and cinema
  • Drawings of geometric shapes in colour or black and white, engravings, lithographs, sculptures made of wood or other materials, textile markings, plastic arts, and other comparable works of art

The artist’s career is protected under UAE copyright legislation. Anyone interested in art must register their copyright in the UAE to prevent the tarnishing of their unique creation. The protection of the original owner’s time, labour, and creativity is the main goal of copyright law.
Additionally, protection does not cover any concepts, practises, or working techniques, official documents (such as the texts of laws, rules, and decisions), current events, news, or works that have been turned over to the public domain.

For a work to be registered as copyright, there are two fundamental requirements:

  1. Copyright work ought to be original and not plagiarised.
  2. There must be copyright work present in the objective form.

  1. Facts, rules, mathematical ideas, techniques, and concepts do not fall under the category of works that are protected by the copyright.
  2. Laws, regulations, international treaties, judgments of courts, and legal documents.
  3. Unprotected news content is that which is in the public domain. Unless a creative attempt is made to organise or compile it.

The UAE's federal copyright and neighbouring rights laws offer protection to those who are innovative. if there is ever a breach of their rights in the emirates.

According to the law, an author has the following rights:

  • the authority to choose the work's initial publication
  • the right to retain credit for his work
  • The ability to bring a lawsuit against the modification of his work if the modification results in falsification or modification
  • the ability to refuse to distribute his work or keep it on hold
  • The right to associate the live or recorded performance under the performers' names belongs to them and their general successor.
  • Owners of copy rights benefit from both monetary and non-monetary rights to a registered work.
  • the ability to copy the work in any format
  • the freedom to record, share, and broadcast across all media
  • In the event that the author passes away, UAE copyright law protects his copyrights on his name for 50 years after his passing. For years following the year of publication, the copyright will be secured if the work is published after the author's passing.
